Boundary inclusions encompass all mass changes occurring within the geographic extent of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, including surface mass balance components (snowfall and meltwater runoff) and dynamic ice loss through calving and basal melting. The signal excludes mass changes from smaller glaciers and ice caps outside these primary ice sheets. It also excludes transient snow cover and sea ice mass variations, focusing exclusively on the solid ice mass constituting the ice sheets themselves. Temporal boundaries align with annual aggregation periods, capturing net mass changes over complete calendar years.
