== Monitoring and Measurement == Ocean salinity is monitored using a combination of in situ and remote sensing methods. In situ observations include conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) profilers deployed from research vessels, autonomous floats such as those in the Argo program, and moored buoys. These instruments measure electrical conductivity, temperature, and pressure to derive salinity values. Satellite missions provide surface salinity estimates through microwave radiometry, enabling broad spatial coverage and frequent temporal sampling. Institutions such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Oceanic_and_Atmospheric_Administration NOAA]) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration ([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASA NASA]) coordinate global ocean salinity monitoring efforts, contributing to datasets that support climate and oceanographic research. Within the SIGNAL system, salinity is treated as a defined environmental signal whose boundaries and measurement conventions are described below.
